Total annual actively purchased sales are slightly down by 3.4% while annual consumer magazine expenditure has remained virtually flat at £1.64bn.

Monthlies in particular have continued to perform robustly with expenditure up by £5.7m and sales up 0.8 per cent year-on year.

Although the Men's Lifestyle sector has seen a decline for some titles, there were some strong results as well, particularly their online offerings. The latest set of ABCe figures delivered a 121% year-on-year user increase for Nuts.co.uk, making it the fastest growing men's lifestyle website in the UK.

Eric Fuller, MD of IPC Ignite and publisher suggests that title such as NME, Kerrang and Nuts should now be judged as multi-platform brands across print, radio, TV and online - which indeed they are.

Phil Cutts, director of marketing at PPA Marketing comments;

“Despite a challenging environment, magazines have managed to retain their overall stability. The latest ABCs show a flat market, but also growth for a good number of titles and a continuing increase in circulation. The figures show that the monthly market has upped its game resulting in a stable six months for this sector. There are winners and losers in virtually every area, but it is encouraging to see successes across a variety of both sectors and platforms. We look forward to the next six months.”
